Valerie Watts, Interim Chief Executive
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council
Mid and East Antrim is a strong, vibrant, safe and inclusive community where people work together to improve the quality of life for all.
Local government and its role in driving economic growth and securing investment has never been more important. We have a clear vision to facilitate this and re-establish our proud reputation as the engine room of the NI economy.
We are a major part of investment projects such as the Belfast Region City Deal, which will deliver up to £1 billion of investment, create around 20,000 jobs and boost prosperity across the region. As a result, Mid and East Antrim is set to secure £80 million of funding from this project to encourage economic development in our area.
Additionally, our bid for a Heathrow Logistics Hub for NI is another one of our headline projects to enhance job creation for the community.
Our vision for the former Michelin factory site in Ballymena, that covers 45 hectares (112 acres) is to create an advanced manufacturing and logistics hub for the construction sector. The site is one of two sites in Northern Ireland identified as part of the Heathrow Hub initiative, that has the potential to lever £5 billion and create 5,000 NI jobs.
Furthermore, plans for a £125 million investment in the transformation of the 15 hectare (37 acre) Saint Patrick’s Barracks site situated in Ballymena are also gaining momentum with initial works to commence in 2021. The mixed use site will comprise housing and leisure usage and will be the site for the i4C innovation Centre.
Mid and East Antrim is determined to make sure our economy has everything it needs in place to grow. With some of the most enviable assets in terms of companies, people and physical resources; we are committed to growing our economy and ensure we have a better future for all.
